It’s the smallest hotel room I’ve ever stayed in.

No windows — I woke up at around 3am not knowing where I was or which country I was in, have you ever had that? Those 3 to 5 seconds of knowing you’ve switched continents (again) but your brain hasn’t registered the change of location…

Anyway, no windows, stark white walls, tiny hotel room.

I’m freezing cold having just landed back in the U.K from Guatemala and wondering how I’m going to do a workout in the smallest hotel room in the world, jumping jacks on the bed, would that work?

Maybe I should just skip the workout, the next hotel room will probably be bigger (let me know in the comments below if you’ve ever had that thought).

But I get my workout motivation back (it was touch and go) because my I-have-to-get-fit-for-this-volcano-hike brain kicks in, people are relying on me, I invited friends, we’re doing it, hiking one of Latin America's most kick ass volcano and it’s going to be tough, I HAVE to be fit and having made that commitment is the only reason I did workout that day in the tiny windlow-less hotel room.

Strong. Bold. Focused.

That’s what I wrote on my post it note after that tiny-hotel workout.

It’s a great workout motivation tool; exercise and then when you’ve got your breath back grab a post it note, write down how you feel with 3 words only and then stick it somewhere you can see to motivate yourself for the next session.

Whether you travel for business or pleasure, the best way to keep yourself accountable to reaching your health and fitness goals is to have an event to focus on.

A fun run, sponsored walk, fancy dress bike ride or obstacle course - whatever floats your boat, just remember this:

Exercise is moving your body in a way that feels good.

Fun, there has to be fun and maybe some mud. Choose an event, rope your friends, family or work colleagues in and keep each other accountable — fitness, fun and friendship boxes all ticked.

How to get started; here’s what I learned from my conversation with Will Hicks, founder of The World's Toughest Mudder podcast and father of two who just happens to have done over twenty Tough Mudders. The Tough Mudder is a non competitive  endurance event and community where participants attempt 10–12 mile-long obstacle courses that test mental as well as physical strength, there's also a Tough Mudder half which is 5 miles.

Will's tips:

1: Commit before you're ready (listen really closely to our conversation for this one)

2: Let your friends, family or work colleagues know you've committed to doing {fill in the blank} and invite them to do it with you.

3: Start exercising every day.

Will’s tips are actually backed up by research; a study from the Dominican University of California showed that the actual strategies for achieving results are committing to action, accountability and regular updates.

I’m excited to share this week’s podcast with you so go an have a listen and here are my top 3 Fitness events you can commit to wherever you are in the world:

  1.  The Tough Mudder, from beginners to elite athletes, there's a course for all fitness levels, you'll find events across 4 continents and if you're traveling solo you can rock up on your own and get instant love and support from the TM community.
  2. Run The Edge, run or walk thousands of miles by yourself or with a team. I love this concept because it encourages you to stay in touch with friends and family either at home or around the world. Run The Edge provide the tools to track your miles, motivation to keep you going, and community to provide support and inspiration along the way.
  3. The Conqueror Event Series, make every mile count towards conquering a fitness goal in 2018. From waling the length of the U.K to cycling route 66, each fitness challenge is fun, interesting and will keep you focused and motivated to exercise whether you are a seasoned pro or just starting out or starting over.

I would love to know which fitness event you’re going to commit to doing this year, leave a comment below and let me know.
