JUNE TRAVEL HEALTH: 5 THINGS TO TRY THIS MONTH

JUNE THEME

Just in case you're new around here, on the first day of each month I release a new theme designed to help you stay motivated and inspired to keep going for your health and fitness goals. This month it's time for:

MID YEAR REVIEW & GOAL SETTING

Time has been whizzing by and we’re already halfway through the year!

Are you on track with your health & fitness goals? Have you been making the progress you wanted to be making? Have you achieved what you want so far?

I find that it’s so easy to get caught up in day-to-day activities – you start off the year with your goals written out and with the best intentions of reaching them, but then life gets in the way!

All of a sudden 5 months have flown by and you’ve not made the progress you wanted to make. You’ve stopped reviewing your goals, let alone writing new ones!

So, now is the perfect time to take a step back and reflect on what’s happened so far, address potential blocks and problems that have held you back, set new goals and map out the rest of the year.

And if you're wondering why, click on the video above and ask yourself why not.

FIND OUT WHERE YOU'RE KEEPING YOURSELF STUCK

If you're exactly where you want to be already then well done you, if there are still things you'd like to achieve this year then try this simple exercise to see where your keeping yourself stuck.

Grab a pen and paper, now think about the top 3 things you'd like to achieve by the end of the year and then imagine it's early December and that you've haven't achieved your goals then write down...

I didn't {insert your top 3 goals here} because {fill in all the reasons why}

This is a great exercise to see where you're keeping yourself stuck and what you need to do to make your goals a reality.

RE-COMMIT TO OR MAKE A NEW FITNESS GOAL

Whether you travel for business or pleasure, the best way to keep yourself accountable to reaching your health and fitness goals is to have an event to focus on.

A fun run, sponsored walk, fancy dress bike ride or obstacle course - whatever floats your boat, just remember this:

Exercise is moving your body in a way that feels good.

For more on fitness events and how to keep yourself accountable have a read of the Fitness, Fun & Friendships article from the start of the year.

MAKE A MOOD BOOSTING PLAYLIST

Get yourself over to Spotify and create a playlist of mood boosting tunes to help stay motivated to keep going for your health, wellness and lifestyle goals. A carefully chosen set of songs can have an instant and lasting effect on both our mood and how our brain and body works.

According to music therapist Adam Sankowski, of the Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts General Hospital, music is an easy way to manage not only our feelings, but how we function. “Our brains and bodies are hardwired for music,” he says. “This is something neurological research has increasingly supported. Through brain-scanning technology, researchers can now clearly see multiple parts of the brain light up when someone listens to music.

Bring on the tunes!

OUTWEIGH NEGATIVITY WITH SIMPLE MINDSET SHIFTS

You've decided on your goals, you're determined to get fit and then...the doubt and negativity creeps in, it happens to the best of us!

Having a basic understanding of your physiology will almost always improve your physical health and the same goes for your mental health, having a basic understanding of how and why you make certain decisions will allow you to course correct when necessary.

International speaker and author Mel Robbins teaches The 5 Second Rule:

"The moment you feel yourself hesitate (when you know you should do something) start counting backward 5-4-3-2-1, then GO. The Rule is a proven, form of metacognition. When you use it, you shift mental gears, interrupt your habit of overthinking and awaken your pre-frontal cortex – making change easy. The rule acts as a “starting ritual” that breaks bad habits and triggers positive new behaviour change".

KEEP HYDRATED THIS SUMMER BY EATING FOODS HIGH IN WATER CONTENT

The human body is made up of over seventy percent water. So understandably, staying hydrated is vital for things like muscle function, joint and brain protection, immune health, digestion, and even mood.

If you’re in a new location or at a breakfast buffet (lucky you, I absolutely love a good breakfast buffet) keep an eye out for watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapefruit, pineapple, apples and pears as they’re are all extremely high in water content.

Whether you’re travelling for business or pleasure it’s likely you’ll find yourself eating out more often than not so remember to have a good look at the menu for any of the following; cauliflower, eggplant, red cabbage, spinach, peppers, cucumber and lettuce.
