MARCH: 5 THINGS TO TRY THIS MONTH

MARCH THEME

HOW TO STAY ALIGNED WITH YOUR HEALTH, FITNESS & LIFESTYLE GOALS

MOTIVATION & MINDSET

Just in case you're new around here, on the first day of each month I release a new theme designed to help you stay motivated and inspired to keep going for your health and fitness goals. This month we're all about:

HOW TO STAY ALIGNED WITH YOUR HEALTH, FITNESS & LIFESTYLE GOALS

MOTIVATION & MINDSET

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Lola Odujinrin—the first British African man to have flown around the world unsupported in an aircraft half the size of an average family car. Can you guess how many years he had to stay aligned with his goals and dreams? Ten, that's a long time so what was his secret?

"YOUR ATTITUDE DETERMINES YOUR DIRECTION"

After 3 businesses and a handful of wild not-publicly-documented expeditions I've come to realise that success is no accident, you have to do it on purpose so before we dive into 5 things to do this month, I want to ask you two important questions:

1: Are your thoughts and beliefs aligned with your goals?

2: If not, what action step do you think you should take to turn that around?

Have a think now, write your answers in the comments below and I'll help you stay accountable.  Now, onwards to the 5 things I've got for you to try this month to help you have the best March ever.

GOAL SETTING -- STRIP IT BACK

What's your 90 day goal? Whether it's health, fitness or lifestyle related, strip it back—it's easy to get caught up in wanting to achieve a million different things and will nearly always work in your favour to take a step back to think about what one thing do you want to achieve in the next 90 days. From there, breaking it down into manageable daily, or weekly steps that will help you get there.

GET EDUCATED

There's a direct link between confidence and competency which in turn will affect our thoughts and feelings in our ability to reach our goals. Will you realistically be able to stay aligned with your goals by yourself or do you need education or support? When you feel competent in your ability to do something, you'll have the confidence to make it happen, it's that simple. Sign up for a course, read a book or work with a coach to shorten your learning curve and accelerate your path to success.

SCHEDULE YOUR ACTION STEPS

Once you've broken down your 90 day goal into weekly or daily action steps, create a timetable for yourself and write down when you're going to work on each step.

This is going to take your productivity to another level. When you can look at your daily plan and say “Ah it’s 3pm and right now I should be doing X” you’ll get less distracted, because you have a schedule to stick to, you’ll feel more motivated, because you know exactly what you need to be doing and everything will become so much easier.

DON'T FORGET TO REWARD YOURSELF

When we give ourselves rewards, we feel energised, cared for, and contented, which boosts our self-command — and self-command helps us to maintain our healthy habits. Rewarding yourself also goes a long way in ensuring emotional independence, when you stop being dependent upon external stimuli for any kind of motivation, incentive or impetus, you become self-dependent. Check this post out for some ideas on healthy rewards.

MAKE A MOOD BOOSTING PLAYLIST

Get yourself over to Spotify and create a playlist of mood boosting tunes to help stay motivated to keep going for your health, wellness and lifestyle goals. A carefully chosen set of songs can have an instant and lasting effect on both our mood and how our brain and body works.

According to music therapist Adam Sankowski, of the Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts General Hospital, music is an easy way to manage not only our feelings, but how we function. “Our brains and bodies are hardwired for music,” he says. “This is something neurological research has increasingly supported. Through brain-scanning technology, researchers can now clearly see multiple parts of the brain light up when someone listens to music.

Bring on the tunes!
